Useful Information

Change in French Legislation

We would like to draw your attention to and relay a change in legislation. We have been informed by the French authorities that fines will be imposed on coach companies which transport passengers without valid travel documentation or visa, up to the amount of €10000 per refused passenger. The fine will be imposed on the driver/company via a court order or the driver maybe arrested in Calais. For further information including requirements, please visit france-visas.gouv.fr.

 

What is the ETA?

The ETA is a digital travel permit required for travellers who want to travel to the United Kingdom but do not require a full visa. It is being introduced in phases and is intended to improve security and control over incoming travellers.

Who needs an ETA?
  • Nationalities: Travelers from countries that could enjoy visa-free travel in the past to the UK.

  • Application: Both for short stays, such as holidays and business trips, as well as for transits via the UK.

  • Please note: Citizens of the EU, EEA and other specific countries will require an ETA from travelling to the UK from April 2, 2025. Always check the latest list of countries on https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta

How to apply for an ETA?

Application process:

  • The application is made online via the official UK government website or using the UK ETA app

  • A valid passport and trip details are required.

  • The fee is approximately £10 (subject to change)

Approval time:

Usually within a few minutes, but travellers are advised to make the request at least a few days before departure.

Validity
  • An ETA is usually valid for multiple trips within a period of 6 months.

  • It is important that travellers check their ETA on every trip and renew it if necessary.

Practical tips for travel agents

Communication with customers:

  • Inform customers of ETA requirements in a timely manner, especially if traveling from visa-free countries.

  • Advise customers to apply for the ETA well in advance.

Check ETA status:

  • Ask travellers to share their approved ETA before you confirm their bookings.

Provide additional help:

  • Provide support to customers who are unfamiliar with online applications.

  • Refer to trusted sources, such as gov.uk, for additional information.

Please note that it remains the travellers' responsibility to have the correct travel documents. P&O Ferries does not compensate costs arising from travellers not having the correct travel documents.

We will absorb any price increases until the price of Marine Gas Oil (MGO) reaches £340 per tonne. At this point the fuel surcharge calculator will indicate the appropriate surcharge for the applicable journey for each coach booking.
